Fall in farm jobs an unmitigated disaster

ONE in twelve farmers and farm workers lost their jobs in the last 12 months, new government figures reveal.

This represents 18,000 jobs lost, before knock-on losses in industries which depend on farming.

Speaking on Radio 4s Farming Today programme, National Farmers Union leader Ben Gill said: “Because these losses are in ones and twos they dont appear anywhere.

“But its an unmitigated disaster, not just for farmers but for the whole rural community and economy.”

He said farming-related businesses, such as building firms and machinery dealers were also going out of business.

“This is worrying because were losing skills we will desperately need when matters start to improve.”

Mr Gill said a weaker sterling and less red tape would give a dramatic boost to farm incomes.
