Farmers leaders spin their pitch in Brussels
By FWi staff
FARMERS leaders will meet European Union farm commissioner Franz Fischler later today to discuss the current crisis in UK agriculture.
A delegation of farmers representatives, including NFU President Ben Gill, left London for Brussels on the Eurostar train, early this morning.
After talking with Mr Fischler, the leaders will meet UK commissioners Sir Leon Brittan and Neil Kinnock. Scottish NFU president, George Lyon, and his deputies Jim Walker and Peter Chapman, will also attend both meetings.
Mr Lyon told a press conference last night that he plans to improve communication between grassroots farmers and the SNFU hierarchy. He said he wants the beef ban lifted and agrimonetary compensation for the dairy and arable sectors.
But the main topic of the day is expected to be a discussion about the Agenda 2000 reform proposals for the Common Agricultural Policy.
