HUNDREDS of farmers are expected to attend a mass rally at Chatsworth House on Tuesday (28 March) to highlight the crisis in farming.

Tenants of the Chatsworth Estate in Derbyshire will gather in the grounds of the house, which is the home to their landlord, the Duke of Devonshire.

The Duke has given his full support to the rally. Farmers and other protestors will be addressed by speakers from the agricultural industry.

The Duke said: “I remember the war years very well when home production was the lifeblood of this country.

“Farmers were almost the most important people in the country. Now it seems to have gone almost the other way.”

The rally, which is expected to attract support from across the country, was organised by local tenant dairy farmers Bill Dilks and Malcolm Sutton.

The event takes place just two days before prime minister Tony Blair holds a Downing Street rally with farmers leaders in a bid to solve the farming crisis.
