Farmers urge shoppers to boycott Dairy Crest boycott

FARMERS For Action have adopted new tactics in their campaign to persuade dairy company Dairy Crest to pay more for its milk supplies. It involves standing outside supermarkets and urging shoppers to boycott Dairy Crest products.

After a trial run last Sunday outside Tesco in Plymouth, a decision has been made to take the campaign nationwide this weekend.

The Plymouth protest was organised by Alan Gifford who farms near Holsworthy, Devon.

"Tesco is adamant they have passed on extra money to Dairy Crest, but Dairy Crest say they havent. Weve tried to get Dairy Crest to come and talk to us but they wont.

"We are getting pretty desperate down here and dont know what to do next to get Dairy Crest to listen. So this Plymouth protest was a trial run. It seems to have worked well," said Mr Gifford.

FFA chairman David Handley confirmed that the "Boycott Dairy Crest products" campaign would go nationwide this weekend. "It is time to tell consumers what Dairy Crest is up to."

He also confirmed that an FFA meeting at Bridgwater, Somerset, this week (Feb 20) had unanimously decided to launch a new attempt to get Dairy Crest back in the hands of farmers.

We are fighting today for a price increase so producers can survive till another day. But unless we get control of processing we have no long-term future," said Mr Handley. &#42
