Fast then transport
WITHDRAWING feed several hours before pigs are transported could reduce incidence of gut splitting and subsequent carcass contamination.
These are the findings of preliminary research by Cambac JMA into the effects of feed intakes before transport. According to researcher, Helen Riches, incidence of gut splitting was notably lower in pigs which had feed withdrawn 10 hours before transport.
Although the research is not comprehensive enough to formulate an industry recommendation, Miss Riches said significant differences between husbandry and housing systems had been observed. *
