‘Fewer, bigger farms way ahead ’
AGRICULTURE needs wholesale restructuring, according to a partner with the consultants Andersons speaking at a Home-Grown Cereals Authority seminar.
David Bolton forecast there would be fewer, bigger farms with a more competitive cost base.
He warned that hill farmers would not survive unless they received substantial aid and said arable farmers faced further difficulties.
These included demands for quality and assurance, a greater reliance on co-operative measures and the need for more forward planning and higher productivity.
Mr Bolton predicted that drilling dates would have to be stretched, with lower seed rates and more efficient use of crop protection measures.
