Firms behind ABMs safe food scheme

MOST feed manufacturers are giving their full backing to Assured British Meats proposed industry-wide food safety scheme.

According to the United Kingdom Agricultural Supply Trade Association, which represents feed mills, about 90% of commercially produced compound feed covered by its feed assurance scheme, UFAS, will comply with ABMs certification standards, which were launched this week.

A spokeswoman for the association said members would absorb the cost of compliance rather than pass it on in higher feed costs. To comply, mills have to adopt hazard control measures and strict documentation checks. UKASTAs director general Jim Reed said the UFAS partnership with ABM was "the best way of achieving safe feed for safe food".

In a separate move, ABM has accepted the first UK haulage company into its food safety scheme. It is Northants-based Baker Group Distribution – the same outfit as Midland Meat Packers – which has the first NVQ Level 1-trained driver in the transportation of livestock by road. &#42
