First glimpse of beans
WITH two out of seven spring bean trials harvested by Tuesday this week yields are on a par with five-year averages and unlikely to be as disappointing as peas, says PGROs Anthony Biddle.
"They enjoy the rain. So if crops arent too thick, they will perform."
Meli, Mars and Quattro are making the running at 107, 106 and 105% of controls, with the all variety average at 4.39t/ha. That compares to a five year mean of 4.41t/ha, notes Dr Biddle, but it is early days to be drawing variety conclusions, he stresses.
Peter Smith at Wherry & Sons has seen a few samples of Victor. "It looks OK. Theyre not very big but they are nice, bright samples." *
