First wheat crops looking good

PAUL TEMPLE, who farms near Driffield in East Yorkshire, is just over a third of his way through the wheat crop. “Weve had a good window of weather in the last three days, which has allowed us to make progress.”

Claire and Equinox first wheat C2 seed crops have performed well. They have yielded about 10t/ha (4t/acre), which is up to the farm average. “Were not going to break any records this year, but were pleasantly surprised. Hopefully the germination has remained intact.”

“The first wheat crops have been grown on prime land. We expect poorer crops to come. Drilling conditions were diabolical during autumn, with some crops in as late as November.”

Weather has been poor in the last month, describing 18 days lost to rain in August, and winter barley straw standing out for the same period. Soil on the farm ranges from sandy to chalk loam.
