Fischler wants five more years
THE Financial Times profiles Franz Fischler, the European farm commissioner.
He is judged by his peers to have done a “good job”, although he admits to having made mistakes. Among the latter were plans to ban parts of cattle from the food chain, which could have led to a ban on life-saving drugs and a trade war with the USA.
There are suggestions that he might return to Austrian politics once his term is ended, or take on another portfolio in the European Commission.
He says he wants to stay in Brussels for a second five-year term of office, starting January 2000, and remain farm commissioner.
