Foie gras under threat
EUROPEAN scientists have concluded that force-feeding ducks and geese with grain to enlarge their livers is “detrimental to the welfare of birds”.
The method, which is used to create foie gras paté, was the subject of a study into production methods.
The scientists called for radical improvements, including a possible ban on products made by force-feeding methods.
The European Commission must now decide whether to use the recommendations as a basis for a legislative proposal.
