French protest over wolves

SHEEP farmers in the French Alps have begun to face the full impact of the protected status now given to wolves – hundreds of sheep attacked and killed.

The animal was declared a protected species in 1994.

Although fewer than 30 are thought to roam the French Alps, a recent parliamentary report blamed them for the deaths of over a 1000 sheep last year.

The farmers are lobbying to change the law.
