French see AN on rise

FRENCH cereal producers have been feeling the pinch of rising fertiliser prices, after a tightening supply of imported and domestic material.

Ammonium nitrate values have climbed steeply from about 750 francs/t (£73/t) last November to a current price of 1050 francs/t (£97/t), according to supply co-op bosses. These increases are in line with the firming seen in the UK.

Manufacturers have welcomed the strengthening market, following several years of low returns. But farmers will be hit hard, as 80% of their fertiliser purchases are made in the January to March period, say French sources. &#42
