Fur farmers demand 7.5m pay-off

FUR farmers want 7.5 million government compensation once the ban on their trade becomes law, reports the Financial Times.

Ministers had previously proposed paying 1.5m compensation.

The call from Fur Breeders Association chairman Len Kelsall came as the Commons scrutinised the bill to outlaw hunting.

Junior agriculture minister Elliot Morley defended the governments case on grounds of public morality, not animal welfare.

Britain could face prosecution in the European Court of Justice over its plans to ban fur farming.

France, Spain, Italy, Denmark and Finland argue the fur-banning bill would contravene the EU ban on measures that impede the free movement of goods.
