Sheltered from the storms… Julian Perowne, the manager at Jack Buck (Farms) Ltd, Moulton Seas End, Lincs, braves blustery showers to check polythene sheets covering 2ha (5 acres) of the 22ha (54-acre) crop of celeriac. He believes the weather has caused a two-week delay.

FUW wayleave campaign

THE Farmers Union of Wales has launched a campaign to get its members to check through their 12 county offices to see whether they have any outstanding claims for wayleave payments.

Farmers are failing to claim 10s of thousands of £s a year in wayleave payments from utility companies, says the FUW.

Peter Davies, the unions Carmarthen branch executive officer, reports making a very large number of claims ranging from £50 to £5000 on behalf of union members.

"This week alone the branch has dealt with three substantial claims amounting to over £12,500 and every penny went straight into farmers pockets," said Mr Davies. &#42
