Germans buy Galloways at spring show

GERMAN Galloway breeders who attended the breed societys spring show and sale at Castle Douglas last week were openly discussing their intentions to take the German government to court over the proposed slaughter of British-bred stock.

And one breeder, Seigfried Wagner, showed his continued support by paying the top female price of 3200gns for Rand &#42 Finlays champion heifer Blackcraig Dusty from thefamilys farm at nearbyCorsock.

"The heifer will have to stay in the UK but German breeders are determined to maintain their support for the Galloway. They say consumers have confidence in our breeds and that Galloway, Highland and Angus beef have continued to sell at premium prices in Germany throughout the BSE crisis," commented John Finlay after the sale.

Leading the bulls was the champion, B G Allans Diamond of Glenturk, a Glenkiln Zeno son, that realised 4200gns to W and J Barrie, Gatehouse-of-Fleet.

Carlisle breeders F A Waugh sold Del Boy of Kilnstown toA M Brown, Castle Douglas for 3500gns. And Craigmuie Seattle, from D W Gourlay and Co, Thornhill, Dumfries made 2200gns to W McMorran, Kirkcud-bright.
