Gleam of hope at Lairg sheep sale
THE Lairg sheep sale in Sutherland, one of Europes largest annual one-day sales of lambs, showed signs of confidence returning to the industry, according to The Herald.
Some 30,000 North Country Cheviot lambs passed through in an eight-hour sale.
Although prices were well below the peak of £50 a head seen two years ago, the newspaper was impressed by buyer interest from across the UK. Prices were £5 above “the expectations of buyers and sellers” with anything above £20 “clearly a bonus”.
This year the sale grossed £500,000, as against £1.3 million two years ago.
A feature of the sale was a near-majority presentation of lambs qualified as farm-assured by the Scotch Quality Beef & Lamb Association.
