COMPULSORY labelling of genetically modified soya and maize is a step closer, according to MAFF after it launched a consultation document on proposed new UK rules to implement Europe-wide regulations agreed in May.

Under the new rules all food, whether packed or sold loose, will need to be labelled if it contains GM soya or maize.

Junior farm minister Jeff Rooker said: "These new rules represent an important step forward for consumer choice and apply to everyone selling food from supermarkets to hot dog stands.

"I now urge Britains food industry to take the lead in making clearer and better labelling a reality," he said. Consultation ends on Sept 7. &#42
