GM rice boosts childhood health

EUROPEAN scientists claim to have genetically modified (GM) rice so it can combat iron deficiency and improve childhood health.

One GM variety is apparently rich in beta-carotene, the substance turned into vitamin A when eaten, while another is rich in iron.

The development of the GM rice was revealed by a scientist from the Swiss Institute for Plant Science, at a conference in St Louis, Missouri.

The new rices have been finances by the European Commission and the Rockefeller Foundation.

They will not be made available to farmers until the nutritional and environmental properties have been examined, the commission said.
