Good yields from late winter barley
PHILIP WHITTAL, who farms at Clehonger near Hereford, finished winter barley on Saturday (11 August) night. He believes he is slightly behind others in the area.
Pearl came off at 15% moisture. The yield was estimated over 7.4t/ha (3t/acre). This is above the farm average of 6.9t/ha (2.8t/acre). “This variety will out-yield feed varieties and it gives us a chance of getting a valuable premium.”
Rain has held up the farm and they only just finished before more rain on Saturday night. “It hope it has not come to much harm.”
Peas should be fit by the weekend. Wheat will be ready soon after. Milestone feed wheat (2nd wheat) looks very good. The farm is based on medium to light loam.
