Grab chance to state strategy

UK FARMERS should seize the chance to explain their strategy for survival at Prime Minister Tony Blairs farm summit in Downing Street, on Mar 30.

"The industry should use the meeting to set out its case on how profitability can be restored," said shadow farm minister Tim Yeo. Key elements in the strategy should include farmers entitlement to monetary compensation, support for the pig industry, clear food labelling and stronger import protection against meats produced from animals reared in low-welfare regimes.

"British livestock farmers, in particular, deserve generous agrimonetary compensation. There is now an overwhelming case for taking a big share of the £360m to which UK farmers are entitled," said Mr Yeo. That money must be claimed by mid-April, he added.
