Grain consumption expected to recover
WORLD consumption of coarse grains is expected to show signs of recovering to pre-Asian crisis levels next year, reports the Financial Times.
The International Grains Council (IGC) predicts coarse grain consumption at 884 million tonnes in1999-2000 against an estimated 876m tonnes in the 1988-99 season.
Trade in coarse grains is also forecast to rise, mainly because of an expected upturn in maize imports, the IGC said.
World wheat consumption is expected at 586m tonnes in 1998-99 against 590m tonnes last season.
