Green belt in jeopardy — say some
DEPUTY Prime Minister John Prescott will have to rip up greenfield sites to build 860,000 homes in the south-east, it has been claimed.
Mr Prestcott will say on Tuesday (7 March) that the region needs 215,000 homes in the next five years, reports The Daily Mail.
It reports that, if this scale of development were continued for two decades, it would see 860,000 new homes built, many on greenfield sites.
But in contrast, the Financial Times expects Mr Prescott to scale down of development plans for the south-east.
It says he will give the go-ahead for 43,000 new homes each year for five years in the region, but is expected to abandon long-term predictions for housing needs.
The newspaper says this will appease conservationists fearful that the green belt would be concreted over.
