Grower cash gives fillip to oat work
PROFITS from oats are set for a boost thanks to HGCA-funded research.
Grower money has helped the Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research develop several new varieties which either feature on the recommended list or are close to it.
Better yield, quality and agronomy are key aims of the initial 39-month programme which has already yielded three new naked oat varieties Krypton, Lexicon and Bullion, says IGERs John Valentine.
Two high yielding conventional winter oats, Kingfisher and Viscount are in Recommended List trials, and Millennium has just entered second year National List trials.
A dwarf variety with good standing power has just entered NL trials, he adds.
Improvements in end-use characteristics like better "hullability" for milling and improved chemical composition to meet the needs of food, feed and industrial markets are also under way.
