Gulf War general joins rural campaign

GENERAL Sir Peter de la Billiere, one of Britains best-known generals, has publicly declared his support for the pro-hunting lobby.

Sir Peter, who commanded the British forces in the Gulf War, said yesterday that any law to ban hunting now would be a “bad law”.

Although he does not ride or hunt, he believed the government should launch an independent inquiry into the hunting issue before launching a law.

Jack Straw is expected to disclose this week that the government will respond to pressure to ban foxhunting by supporting a private members bill in the next session of parliament.

But as a concession to the hunting lobby, the home secretary will also order an inquiry into claims that a ban could put 16,000 people out of work.
