Half of collection centres approved
By FWi staff
ABOUT half of the expected number of collection centres have been approved. More are expected to come on-stream shortly.
Since centres began operating eight weeks ago, 42 have gained approval for operation (see table) although Thirsk is currently suspended due to foot-and-mouth regulations in that area.
A further 53 are waiting for the green light as their applications are assessed by trading standards offices and the Meat and Livestock Commission.
Many of the initial obstacles to marts gaining consent to operate, particularly the hard-core issue, seem to have been ironed out now, says an MLC spokesman.
