High scores pull crowds at Bristol
High scores pull crowds at Bristol
By Jeremy Hunt
A FEAST of black-and-white breeding, show winners and high yields combined to draw a big crowd to Bristol last week where Robert Jones Failand herd was dispersed to a top of 7200gns.
The short-notice dispersal of the herd with an average yield of 11,105kg at 3.95% fat and 3.33% protein, did nothing to deter buyers travelling long distances. It is thought the Failand cattles classification average of 87 points is the highest of any herd offered for a complete dispersal in the UK.
Top call came for Murlone Astre Cher, a second calver that gave 11,452kg as a heifer. She is out of a 10,8600kg Astro Jet dam and stood champion at Otley Show this year. Buyer at 7200gns was Roberts brother Philip for his Newfailand herd. Cher had a Ped Index of 784, PIN +£47 and ITEM +£48.
The in-calf heifer Quality Raider Franly, served in February to Rudoloph, made 4400gns to Messrs Miller and Son for their successful west country based Moorshard herd. There is certainly milk to spare behind this heifer – shes bred from three generations of 15,000kg cows.
The herds noted show cow, the 1991-bred Holywell Madonna 2nd, drew a 3000gns bid from Messrs Quick for their Mendip herd. This well-known Counselor daughter gave 19,438kg in 484 days in her second lactation after nudging 13,000kg in 326 days as a heifer.
A successful show winner for two years – she won the production-inspection class at this years Three Counties Show – she was recently served by Shen-Val Nv Lm Formation. Also at 3000gns was Quality Lindy Ruthie, a calved heifer with a Ped Index of 810 and out of an Astro Jet dam. Buyer was Mrs D Beer for her Coldridge herd in Devon.
Two striking heifer calves of nine and 10 months old made 2600gns each. Failand Inspiration Linda is out of a Raider dam and has a Ped Index of 963, PIN +£77 and ITEM +£78. Failand Starbuck Arlene is out of the 12,476kg Elitestreet Cosmo Arlene.
AVERAGES: 15 cows £2348; 14 calved heifers £1573; 20 in-calf heifers £1613 and five heifer calves £1659. (Greenslade Taylor Hunt).n
