Illegal workers held in Norfolk

MORE than 20 people were detained by the Immigration Service and police officers after a raid on two Norfolk vegetable processing factories.

The raid was the latest in a long-term operation targeting illegal agricultural workers. It was on the premises of Mid Norfolk Canners and its associated company, Norfolk Farm Produce, both at Beeston.

Some of the workers fled when they saw the officers arrive and police dogs were used to round them up.

Those detained by a squad of 25 police and immigration officers were taken in vans to Dereham police station where they were questioned and documents examined.

A Home Office spokesman said further action was likely as part of a campaign to clamp down on illegal working.

Rogue gangmasters, who recruit people for field and factory work, are among the targets of the campaign.

The two firms involved in the latest raid declined to comment. &#42
