HEADLINE: Stylish coloured breeds shine in the show ring

TEXT: With Holstein numbers down on previous years, the coloured breeds dominated the show ring of this year’s Dairy Event, with many a stylish and well balanced cow brought forward in front of the judges.
Taking top spot on the day,
and going one better than the
breed championship secured at last year’s event, were Duncan Hunter and Paul Gent of Berkhampsted, Berkshire, with their senior homebred cow Haresfoot Bella 6, scoring 57 points in the interbreed championship.
Fourth lactation Bella, who had previously taken the exhibitor bred champion title as well, gave an impressive 12,524 litres last lactation and is yielding 4.87% butterfat and 3.54% protein.
Taking reserve overall spot was the Holstein at the hands of Steve Bell from Penrith under the Holmland prefix. Having taken the breed championship under judge John Cousar of Ayrshire, the Bell’s third calving Indianhead Durham Roxan was awarded 55 points in the interbreed ring.
Out of Sellcrest No Rachel Red and sired by Regancrest Elton Durham, Roxan has given 3795 litres 79 days into lactation, yielding 4.02% butterfat and 3.07% protein.
In the other breed sections the Wilson’s of Cardigan, Ceredigion, took the Jersey championship with the Bluegrass-bred junior cow which won interbreed heifer champion at Dairy Event 2005. And in the Guernsey ring it was a double win for the John Sansom and Ian Crouch partnership of Blandford, Dorset, with their second calving Cracker Duchess taking top spot under breed judge Morris Grose.

CAPTION: Haresfoot Bella 6 took the interbreed title at this year’s Dairy Event for Duncan Hunter and Paul Gent of Berkampsted, Berkshire.
