HEADLINE: Top red-and-white genes at Baileys Holstein event
TEXT: Red-and-white Holstein supporters sent prices to 16,000gns this week for some of the UK’s most exclusive red-and-white genetics at the dispersal of the Baileys herd.
Moved to Beeston Castle from their home on the edge of the Howgill Fells in Cumbria, Andrew and Beverley Bailey’s cattle were brought out in sparkling form. But it was Copywood Storm Sara Red that drew the top bid.
From this illustrious Sara family, her dam is the renowned 30,000gns Copywood Integrity Sara Red. Her Storm daughter, with a first lactation of 11,200kg and in-calf to Shottle, was taken by Lancashire-based Aubrey Greenhalgh for a client.
Age was no barrier to bids. The 1995-bred Morwick Range Molli Red was carrying her seventh calf (by Cedarwal Redwood) after a string of five-figure yields peaking at 12,115kg. By Horizon Ranger Red, she made 10,000gns to Coritas Holsteins, Staffordshire.
Leicestershire buyer Andy Birkall gave 5300gns for her first-calf daughter Baileys Lakeside Molli Red (by Roesbett Lakeside) while R C Atkin & Partners, Middlewich, Cheshire, took two of the highest priced lots. At 5000gns they claimed the 2001-bred Riverdane Lystel Rapture, a 12th generation Excellent cow with some good show wins to her credit followed by 4200gns for the seven-month-old heifer calf Baileys Info Molli Red, a Fradon Inferno daughter.
There was a string of 5000gns bids. Hefin George, Haverfordwest, took the June 2004-bred Quality Sky Fame heifer Baileys Famous Ankera, while Wills Bros, Wadebridge, Cornwall, matched the bid for the in-calf Baileys Talented Molli Red.
Guest consignments reached 4300gns for Warwickshire breeder Nigel Hollick’s Honesberie Redman Melanie, a December 2005-bred daughter of Valleyriver Ruben Redman out of Fradon Storm Melanie (sister to the RASE 2004 champion Dalesend Storm Maud). Buyer was A Wilson, Tregibby, South Wales.
Averages: Baileys – 52 cows and milking heifers ÂŁ2464, 18 in-calf heifers ÂŁ1847 and 17 maiden heifers ÂŁ831. Honesberie – six maiden heifers ÂŁ1802, High Society – six heifers ÂŁ1250, Whartonspool – four heifers ÂŁ2388 and Marlie – eight milkers ÂŁ1345. (Wright Manley)
