IN BRIEF

&#8226 COLCHESTER market is moving up a gear, after last weeks announcement that Bury St Edmunds is to close in December. In addition to the Tuesday finished stock auction, the Essex mart plans to introduce a Thursday sale from Jan 7 offering store pigs, store cattle and sheep.

&#8226 JERSEY Giants, Buff Laced Wyandottes and Silkies will be among the breeds of poultry on offer at tomorrows (Nov 21) sale of rare and minority breeds at Lichfield, Staffs. Also up for grabs will be Longhorn cattle, Shetland sheep and Tamworth pigs – though not the "Tamworth Two", say auctioneers Wintertons. A sale of vintage tractors and agricultural bygones will also take place.

&#8226 THE Bradbury herd of Holstein Friesians was dispersed for Messrs Friend at Umberleigh, Devon, where a good trade pushed prices to 1500gns for a VG85 Vanguard-sired fifth calver. She had given 9935kg with her last calf and was bought by Holsworthy dairy farmer A J Dayment. A daughter, by Hanoverhill Lieutenant, sold to a local buyer for 920gns and was one of three to reach this figure.

Averages: 95 cows and heifers £538 and 14 heifer calves £316 (Stags). &#42
