IN BRIEF

uWINTER barley Fanfare was the variety most widely sold to maltsters last year, says breeder Advanta. Maltsters Association of GB figures show it accounted for 28% of sales in England and Scotland, it notes. Regina and Halcyon followed at 23% and 22%, respectively, with Pipkin accounting for just under 10%.

uMAFFs five-year thumbs-up for HDCs near-market research, after an exhaustive review and levy payer ballot, has been welcomed by chairman, Margaret Charrington. The decision will help growers meet the many challenges the industry faces, she says.

uTHREE new true compound fertilisers, not blends, all containing sulphur to assist early growth, will be available this autumn, says Hydro Agri. Analyses are 0:24:24, 8:24:24 and 0:20:30. The first two contain 4.9% SO3, the latter 3.8%. Spreader settings as for Extran. &#42
