&#42 NEARLY £300,000 has been raised by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society to alleviate financial hardship due to foot-and-mouth.

The society kick-started the fund with a £50,000 donation and gifts from individuals and the commercial sector followed quickly. Barbeques, knitting, picture-painting and sponsored events were all used to raise money. The Countryside Agency provided match funding for all monies raised by the public.

About 80% was given to the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution. The remainder has been donated to the Farm Crisis Network and The Samaritans.

&#42 FORMER Yorkshire Agricul-tural Society chief executive, the late Robin Keigwin will be sadly missed at this years event. Mr Keigwin died on Feb 5, at the age of 56, after a long battle with cancer. He took up the post of chief executive in 1992. Mr Keigwin leaves a widow, Pru and two sons, Richard and Michael.
