Input trade & advice on net

A NEW internet trading post for farm inputs and services set up by Scottish farmers and advisers will open for business in early summer.

Globalfarmers.com has £3.6m backing from Bank of Scotland and Caledonian Heritable Investments and will operate initially in the UK and Ireland, taking a commission on all sales made through its site.

While trading through globalfarmers.com is expected to be mainly in physical inputs such as feed and fertiliser, finance and consultancy are also expected to feature, as are niche products.

The service will not be tied to any particular manufacturer, says chief executive Jonathon Land.

"Our simple aim is to deliver a trading platform that will drive out inefficiencies and cost from the agricultural industry in order to help sustain an industry in dire need of assistance.

"For far too long farmers have been buying retail and selling wholesale."
