Jersey dairy champ puts black-and-whites in shade

By Jeremy Hunt

BLACK-AND-WHITE entries were side-lined in the final shake-up for the interbreed dairy championship at the Royal Lancs Show, where a Jersey stood supreme just pipping a stylish Ayrshire into reserve.

John Heath, who runs the Ravenfield Jersey herd at Cowden, near Hull, says he has reduced his herd from 140 head to just a handful. But the retained show team notched up another tricolour on the Chorley showground in the midst of a successful season of wins.

Top was fourth calver Ravenfield Rosetta, a daughter of Wetherby Flash Busters Prince containing a dash of New Zealand breeding. She had stood breed champion at the Royal Highland in 1998 and 1999. Last month she was best-uddered Jersey at the Great Yorks.

She was favoured for the interbreed ticket over Mrs M Gregsons Ayrshire cow in-milk Longback Clover 4 from the familys well known herd at Ormskirk, Lancs.

Some of the summer shows most garlanded beef cattle were on parade, swelling sections of both Continental and native breeds. A strong Limousin entry produced the interbreed beef champion in Stephen Potters Broadmeadows Jiji, fresh from her supreme ticket at the Great Yorks Show.

Lonk and Derbyshire Gritstone sheep usually feature among the top awards at the show, but successful Lonk breeder John Pickard from Blackburn had to be content with the reserve non-accredited interbreed championship. His ram was beaten by a smart Teeswater ewe from A Fisher.

The accredited section title fell to a Suffolk ram lamb from Mark Falshaws Cheswell flock at Bury.
