Juggling beef and band duties

TOP of the Pops, here we come, says Essex farmer and band manager Alan Stephens, with the new band Word on the Streets single now in the shops.

"Were going straight to the top," says Alan, who juggles running his 70-head beef suckler herd at Great Dunmow, Essex with publicity and touring duties for WOTS.

It started last summer when he got talking in a pub to Leigh Dewar, who said he was trying to form a band. "I knew about as much about managing a pop group as Leigh did about calving cows," says Alan. "But several beers later it seemed like a wonderful idea."

Then came the auditions, trips to the recording studios, demo tracks and a 30-day tour, with the farm Discovery commandeered as tour bus.

Now, the four band members – Leigh, Mikey, Cas and Elaine – have a string of gigs planned and high hopes for their first single, Sing it to You.

"If someone had told me a year ago all this would be happening, I would never have believed them," says Alan.
