Just starting wheat harvest

FARMERS in North Lincolnshire have just started winter wheat, says Paul Steer, manager for CGR Booth. They plan to start on Wednesday (15 August) on Consort winter wheat.

“Farmers are starting on Claire wheat at about 18.5% moisture. They are starting today as they are worried about sprouting. This seems to be a Claire problem.”

The farm grows Consort, Napier and Savannah for feed, and Xi19 and Option for C1 and C2 seed.

Oilseed rape harvest was finished 10 days ago. “Yields varied from 2.8t/ha (1.15t/acre), where the crop suffered from wet feet, to 4t/ha (1.6t/acre), which is just below average for the farm, but acceptable.”

The farm also has spring barley and spring beans, which will be ready in September. “The beans are very green. They must have grown six inches in this last rain.”
