Kiwis approves 4,000 transgenic sheep
NEW Zealands Environmental Risk Management Authority has given PPL Therapeutics the go-ahead to keep up to 4,000 transgenic sheep.
But the biotechnology company which bred Dolly the sheep faces opposition from Maoris natives and environmental groups Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth.
PPL has produced sheep that are genetically altered to produce certain medicines in their milk.
There have been some concerns that if some escape, they could breed with other local animals.
The group has just reported a full-year pre-tax loss of 14.2m, up 40% on last time.
