Late harvest, average yields

“WE would normally be expected to be finishing harvest now, but now we are only half-way through,” says William Russell, who farms at Ardstraw near Newtownstewart in Co Tyrone.

They have combined 95% of winter barley and have started spring barley. Jewel, Regina and Heligan have yielded 7.4t/ha (3t/acre), which is slightly above average.

Feed spring barley varieties are yielding 5.4-5.9t/ha (2.2-2.4t/acre), which is average for the light land farm.

“Im pleased enough with the yields, but the moisture is up to 22%, which means too much drying.”
