Late plantings trigger beet rhizo
By FARMERS WEEKLY staff
THE NUMBER of rhizomania outbreaks look set to rise this year, due to late planting in warm wet soils in the spring.
New confirmed outbreaks of the disease had already reached nine by Monday (10 September), Compared to a total of 13 new farms affected last year.
But only half the crops identified for ground inspection by aerial photos had been checked, prompting fears that new cases will surge.
“We are probably looking at a higher final figure than last year,” admits Steve Ashby of Defras plant health division.
