Lim bull hits Carlisle jackpot
IT was jackpot time for the Nattress family of Co Durham at Carlisle last weekend, when a son of their imported Limousin bull Igolo made 15,000gns.
Igolo is making a big impact on the familys Greenwell herd. His first-born bull calf was sold in the same ring exactly a year ago for 7500gns. Last week it was a full brother, Greenwell Major, that created the biggest stir.
Major, which stood intermediate champion, had a daily liveweight gain from birth of 1.5kg. He is bred out of a cow by Daim, another import that has laid the foundation for some outstanding females in the herd. Major joins Matt and Craig Ridleys Haltcliffe herd at Hesket Newmarket, Cumbria.
Other Greenwell successes included the reserve intermediate champion Greenwell Mozart (9500gns to Mr and Mrs E Jones, Lampeter), Greenwell Manager (9000gns to Bill Quick and Sons, Crediton), Greenwell Master (5800gns to Teward Bros, Barnard Castle) and Greenwell Mike (5000gns to J W Fieldson, Gainsborough).
Broadmeadows Cannon continues to stamp his progeny with an unmistakable style and shape – and typical was Spage Master, a real eye-catcher from Co Antrim breeder William Campbell. He made 11,500gns to Bill Mash, Chesham, after standing junior champion.
Cheshire breeder Anne Thompson earned much praise for her determined handling of Tunnelby Monkeytricks.
Despite being unsettled, this powerful son of Ronick Cosmos headed his class, finished reserve overall champion and made 10,000gns to J Handley, Carnforth, Lancs.
More of the same breeding came through in Ronick Member from R Dick, Stirling. By The Tarvis-sired Ronick Idol, he also made 10,000gns to R M Adam and Son, Forfar.
Cumbria breeder A B Holliday, Penrith, also tapped into the Cannon gold seam with three impressive bulls: Eden Maestro, Eden Mandela and Eden Meteor.
They made 9000gns, 8700gns and 8300gns to L Forster and Son, Hexham, J Hair, Stranraer, and A and D Orr, Fife, respectively.
AVERAGES 71 senior bulls £2733, 70 intermediate bulls £3032, and 54 junior bulls £3651. (The junior section was up £648 on 1996.) (Harrison and Hetherington.) *
