Lim calves impress

SEVEN Limousin herds consigned 116 calves which twice hit a top of 2800gns at a sale at Carlisle.

Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire breeder Martin Gethin was the first to achieve the top bid when his eight-month-old bull calf Ardbrack Olympus, a son of French sire Ivanhoe, was sold to Northumberland suckler producer Fred Murray.

Mr Murray, who was in the market selling commercial cattle and had not intended to buy a bull, was impressed with Olympuss "width and weight gain". The 13 bull calves from the Ardbrack herd averaged £1110 and the six heifer calves £714.

Suckler producers Messrs Walton, Hexham have produced many market-topping calves by the 4200gns Glenrock Joe. They were back again to buy full-brother Glenrock Orinoco at 2800gns from Stephen and Helen Illingworth, Lockerbie. Orinoco is by Crownhead Busby. The 17 Glenrock bull calves averaged £957.

Top heifer call was 1800gns from Christine Williams, Shropshire, to secure a Sarkley entry from the Pennies herd in Wales. &#42
