Lincoln Reds for organics
LINCOLN Red cattle are making a name as a suitable breed for organic beef production, after last weeks Lincoln Red Cattle Societys annual show and sale at Louth Market, Lincs.
Local organic farmer Andrew Dennis, who has a door-to-door organic vegetable delivery business, bought 17 cows and heifers for his Lincs-based Woodland herd.
Mr Dennis said his customers had expressed a need for organic meat and he hoped this rapid expansion of his beef business would help meet demand.
"We think Lincoln Reds are the best suited to our organic farming system, and we intend to feed them entirely from the produce of the rest of the farm." Mr Denniss brother, David, kept the sales headlines in the family by buying the top price bull, Anwick Braveheart from Laurence Bembridge for 1750gns, for his organic herd.
The events supreme champion Anwick Crusader, also from Mr Bembridge, sold for 1600gns to a buyer from Essex.
In-calf heifers levelled at £644, and 30 females from the Colony Carr herd from HM Prison Lindholme averaged £560. *
