Live export ban march in Dover
ANIMAL welfare campaigners marched through Dover last Saturday (Aug 17) in protest at live sheep exports.
About 350 demonstrators took part in the demonstration – the first major protest since exports resumed from the port earlier this month. *
TV screenwriter and campaigner Carla Lane said: "We want an end to live exports. It is an unnecessary trade. These demonstrations may not move mountains but they let the government know we are still here."
Up to 1.2m lambs/year before the foot-and-mouth crisis, about 5% of total UK output. The Meat and Livestock Commission believes the resumption of live shipments will surplus lambs from the home market at a time when prices start to fall.
