uCOWS grazing tetraploid perennial ryegrass varieties could potentially produce 2kg milk a cow a day more than those grazing diploid varieties, or could be fed 1kg less concentrate a day to produce the same volume of milk. Trials in Northern Ireland, showed tetraploids had a higher intake/bite, and a lower shear strength, which could affect ease of intake and speed of passage through the rumen, says plant breeder Sharpes International. *
