Lobby unions about MDC
IF FARMERS want the Milk Development Council to become involved in generic milk promotion then they must lobby their unions to put pressure on government.
Brian Peacock, MDC chairman, pointed out that the development council was an enabling organisation rather than a pressure group. "Responsibility for persuading government to change the MDCs remit lies solely with the farming unions, in their role as farmers representatives."
While MDC could react to the wishes of most milk producers on this issue, it could not itself press for changes, he said.
Since its establishment in 1995, the MDC has been prevented under its government-agreed remit to allocate funds to generic milk advertising. Any change would need approval from both the majority of milk producers and farm ministers.
