Locked out of producer club
MLC chairman Don Currys presence at a meeting of Tesco/St Merryn Meat Producer Club members prompted members of another Tesco producer club to ask why Mr Curry was there when they were barred at the door.
Nick Westcott was one of those not allowed in. He is a member of Tesco/Southern Counties Fresh Foods producers club and chairman of the steering committee elected following a mass protest meeting at Exeter in March.
Its job is to represent members of both Tesco clubs. Mr Curry is chairman of North Country Primestock, a co-op which supplies Tesco through a Midlands abattoir.
Mr Westcott feels the presence of the MLC chairman at the St Merryn Club meeting was evidence that the steering committees work with Tesco was producing results.
Mr Curry told FW that when Tesco heard he was visiting the St Merryn Meat plants on the same day as the club meeting they invited him to attend. *
