COMPENSATION for sheep and goats slaughtered as a result of suspected scrapie has been set by MAFF for the month of August.
Producers will be paid £14.78 if scrapie is confirmed by post-mortem. For cases subsequently confirmed as unaffected farmers will be paid the greater of:
- The amount payable for a confirmed case; or
- Such sum as appears to be, having regard to any evidence provided by the owner of the animal slaughtered, to reflect the market value of the animal, subject to a maximum of £400 per animal.
The compensation rate has been determined by reference to the average cull ewe market price and the number of animals sold in Great Britain in the month of June 1999, as published in the Meat and Livestock Commission Weekly UK Market Survey.
