Maize fight-back?

MAIZE crops suffering from attacks by frit fly should recover well if the weather improves.

So says ADAS pest specialist John Oakley, who blames the combination of late drilling and development of the pest during a warm May for the high number of frit fly strikes in crops this month.

Although little can be done to control frit fly post-emergence, Mr Oakley suggests many crops will simply out-grow its development as the weather improves, thereby safeguarding potential yield losses.

MGAs Simon Draper says the effect on yields is likely to be highly variable; with untreated seed being at greatest risk.
