Malting barley acreage expected to shrink
THERE will less enthusiasm to plant malting barley next year following the poor prices achieved in the current season, says the Institute of Brewing (IoB).
This could mean a recovery in prices, the Institute forecasts.
The IoBs latest newsletter reports the lowest grain prices for 20 years.
It also finds there is a surplus of grains, in the UK and worldwide. But the strong Pound, allied to weak prices has added to the difficulties of export.
The barley crop in 1998 totalled about 7 million tonnes – enough to supply both the UK and Europe..
